Many Arizona senior are very capable and independent, even fiercely so. After decades of taking care of and providing for their families, as well as themselves they rightly feel pride in thier competency. But the progress of time and illness can slowly deteriorate their abilities while it does not always have the same effect on their pride. Most often the incapacity does not arrive all at once when a senior wakes up one morning, rather acuity fades slowly without anyone noticing at first.

Tragically this can lead to a situation in which a senior becomes vulnerable without having taken the proper measures to ensure that they will be safely cared for. Fortunately there are several methods available to ensure that a loved will be properly cared for and not neglected or taken advantage of. Conservatorships and guardianships can provide piece of mind for both the senior and their families.

A troubling story appearing in the Arizona Daily Sun this weekend highlights the dangers that seniors can face if they are incapacitated and not properly cared for. In this case a man faces charges of elder abuse after a 74-year-old woman in his care was found after having died of neglect. The specifics of the incident tell a story of neglect that no one should have to endure.

Because the need for assistance may not become apparent all at once, it can be difficult to recognize before the need is acute. It can be helpful to consider long term care plans earlier before the need has arrived. This can remove uncertainty, fear and doubt that can surround these issues.
